Super Mario RPG is an exciting role-playing video game that combines action and strategy. In this game, you control Mario, along with his friends Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Princess Toadstool. Together, they must stop the evil Smithy Gang and collect seven Star Pieces to restore peace and make wishes come true once again.
The game takes place in a diverse world with various regions like mountains, forests, and bodies of water. Each region has its own unique inhabitants, such as Toads in the Mushroom Kingdom, moles in Moleville, reformed monsters in Monstro Town, Yoshi and his species on Yo'ster Isle, and cloud people in Nimbus Land. Bowser's Castle is also a significant location in the game, as it holds the portal to the Smithy Gang's homeworld.
At the beginning of the game, Mario's main goal is to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. However, their plans are disrupted when the Smithy Gang invades Mario's world. Mario teams up with Mallow, a cloud boy who believes he's a tadpole; Geno, a doll possessed by a celestial spirit; Bowser, who has lost his armies to the fear of the Smithy Gang; and Princess Toadstool, who got caught up in the chaos caused by the gang's arrival. The Smithy Gang is led by Smithy, a robotic blacksmith from another world who wants to conquer the world.
As you explore the game's overworld, you'll encounter non-playable characters and enemies. Touching an enemy triggers a turn-based battle where you must defeat them and possibly other foes.
The game is divided into different levels and sections that you navigate using a map screen. You typically need to complete certain objectives to progress to the next section of a world. Along the way, you'll also encounter mini-games that add variety to the gameplay.
Your party starts with Mario and gradually expands to include up to five characters. During battles, you can choose three characters to fight, and you can switch them out as you explore the overworld. Each character has unique abilities and techniques. For example, Princess Toadstool focuses on healing, while Geno and Bowser have powerful offensive attacks. Battles follow a turn-based system, but you can enhance your moves by timing button presses correctly, known as action commands. This feature became a staple in later Mario RPGs.
