Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels serves as a sequel to Super Mario Bros. and was initially exclusive to Japan until its inclusion in Super Mario All-Stars and Virtual Console releases. In Japan, this game is simply known as Super Mario Bros. 2. However, in the United States, it was replaced by another game with the same name (later released in Japan as "Super Mario USA").

The Story of Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels

The story of Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels follows the same premise as Super Mario Bros.: Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach (known as Princess Toadstool outside of Japan) and transformed the Mushroom Kingdom's inhabitants into various objects. This time, Luigi joins the adventure and brings his unique abilities to help rescue Peach.

If Mario or Luigi manages to complete levels 1-1 through 8-4 without using warp zones, they are transported to "Fantasy World" (World 9) with only one life, where they replay those four levels until they lose.

With each completion of 8-4, a star is added to the title screen. After collecting eight stars, Mario or Luigi can embark on a second quest featuring four new worlds: A through D. The story remains the same as the first quest.

Playable Characters

  1. Mario: Upon learning of Bowser's capture of Princess Peach, Mario sets out on a mission to save her. He controls similarly to Super Mario Bros., with the ability to jump far, run fast, and stop quickly.
  2. Luigi: Luigi shares many similarities with Mario but possesses a slightly higher jump and poorer traction, making him feel like he's walking on ice. This game marks the first appearance of Luigi's distinct jumping physics in a Mario game.

Enemies Encountered

  • Koopa Troopa: Turtle-like enemies that can be jumped on to defeat. Green ones walk off platforms, while red ones turn around at the edges.
  • Koopa Paratroopa: Winged Koopa Troopas that can jump higher or fly straight. They lose their wings when stomped.
  • Goomba: The most common enemy, tries to run into you. Jumping on one defeats it, and sometimes they appear in groups.
  • Lakitu: Rides on clouds and throws Spinies at you. They hover high above, making them hard to reach.
  • Spiny: Spiked enemies thrown by Lakitus. You can't defeat them by jumping, but you can destroy them with a shell, fireball, or invincibility.
  • Buzzy Beetle: Similar to Koopa Troopas but tougher. You can defeat them by knocking them off edges, using a shell, or being invincible.
  • Piranha Plant: Carnivorous plants that come out of pipes to bite you. Green ones stay inside their pipes when you're nearby, while red ones move in and out even when you're close.
  • Bullet Bill: Projectiles shot from cannons that move toward you.
  • Hammer Bros.: Two Koopa brothers that throw hammers. They often appear in pairs.
  • Cheep Cheep: Fish enemies found in water levels. They swim towards you, and some can even jump high on land.
  • Blooper: Squid-like enemies that swim or fly towards you. Some Bloopers can fly.
  • Podoboo: Fireballs that jump out of lava or water. You need to time your movements to avoid them.
